Malagas Hotel *****
Main Road Off the N2 near Swellendam Malagas Garden Route
Built in 1996, Malagas Hotel is an 18-room "old Cape" style establishment comfortable accomodation, tasty meals and old-fashioned hospitality. The small, historic village of Malagas, situated on the Breede River, is now rather quiet but was once a regular stop for steamboats transporting fruit, wine and provisions up and down the wide river.
The variety of tastefully decorated rooms & suites can accomodate up to 72 persons. Their wooden beams and classic "rietdak' ceilings are a feature of the entire hotel, complimented by the wonderful paintings if the owner's mother. Good 'South African home-cooking' features strongly on the menu together with more traditional dishes. A selection of local wines are available to compliment your meal. Enjoy a hearty full English breakfast, and at lunch-time Moxie's Pub offers light meals and pub lunched. Moxie's Pub was named after Moxie Dunn who "manned" the ferry for twenty-five years, from 1961 to 1986. The "pont", as it is known locally, was first used in 1860. The present model, in use since 1952, is one of the last man-drawn ferries in South Africa. It still carries people, vehicles and livestock back and forth accross the river every day.
